Remember The Past And Await The Future

about

Directly quoting Bridget Bishop at the very end of A Discovery of Witches, the idea of timewalking has always fascinated me in this series. Generally speaking, time travel is rarely an easy concept to develop or explain to readers (ask JK Rowling herself), however, I thought it fit extremely well in its historical context and as we know, it was ultimately instrumental in advancing the plot in Shadow of Night.

After being left with this painful cliffhanger in ADOW and having to wait several months for SON to come out, I had imagined how these scenes would play out with Diana and Matthew attempting to timewalk for the first time. The composition is in it of itself a ticking clock, using pizzicato on the violas for the obvious metaphor, while increasing and decreasing the tension in the orchestra to represent the characters in the build up to it.

You could say this is a timewalking "theme", but in my mind I see it more as the epic finale to the first book, the final image being a dark, rainy, and mysterious setting in Elizabethan England, as the ghostly voices and ticking clock fade away into nothing.
