This is the 10th track for Music for All Souls, a collection of orchestral compositions inspired by Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy.

Although the title suggests a direct reference to Ysabeau and Marthe, this piece is less about them as characters, and more about the quiet, desolate life at Sep-Tours. I wrote the main theme as the imaginary underscore to accompany the audience around the magnificent estate, while the de Clermont family members each take their own turns to lecture Diana about how vibrant and different Sept-Tours was in the 1500s… a de Clermont family history if you will. I thought about using the piano motif as a prelude to Ysabeau & Philippe’s “love theme”, which I’ve yet to write. Nevertheless I think it would be suitable to have some musical connection with the characters and the estate.

The B section of this composition (at 1:53 mins), where the strings come in full force, could represent a scene change. If it was the TV show, I sort of imagined the camera zooming out of one of the ancient rooms of Sept-Tours, weaving and wading through its ghostly corridors, dissolving from a window to the exterior of the house, and beautifully catching up to Diana and Matthew on horseback. Back in the garden, Ysabeau and Marthe offer their opinion on the matter.

The cadence offers a bit of optimism, and feel free to imagine whatever your mind conjures up as the strings hold on to a gradually fading major chord… because as we all know, a storm is on its way.
